CAF backs FIFA President Infantino re-election bid

The Confederation of African Football has thrown its weight behind FIFA President Gianni Infantino, unanimously endorsing his bid for re-election for the 2027–2031 term, a move that effectively delivers him 54 early votes.

The decision was reached in Vancouver, Canada, and is seen as a major boost for Infantino’s re-election prospects, reinforcing what observers describe as a coordinated African bloc within global football governance.

The show of support from CAF, the largest voting group in FIFA elections, adds significant momentum to Infantino’s continued leadership, as he has held the presidency since 2016.

In an official statement, the continental body confirmed the consensus among its members, saying, “The CAF Member Associations unanimously agreed to support Gianni Infantino to be re-elected as President of FIFA for the period 2027–2031.”

The next FIFA presidential election, scheduled for the 2027–2031 cycle, is expected to take place in Morocco.

Infantino could potentially extend his tenure through 2031, following a ruling that his first term is not counted within the 12-year term limit.
