The Corporate Affairs Commission has announced that all point of sale operators who fail to register their businesses will face a nationwide shutdown starting January 1, 2026.
The Commission also revealed that financial technology companies facilitating unlawful activities are now under strict surveillance.
In a statement released on Saturday, CAC expressed concern over what it described as a growing trend of unregistered PoS terminals across the country, labeling the situation a “reckless practice”.
The Commission stressed that the rise in unlicensed operators constitutes a breach of the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020, as well as the Central Bank of Nigeria’s regulations on agent banking.
To address this, CAC urged those in the PoS business to take immediate steps toward proper registration, emphasizing that “compliance is mandatory.”
The Commission further cautioned that enforcement efforts would involve law enforcement agencies. According to the statement, “Unregistered PoS terminals will be seized or shut down by security officials.
“Fintechs enabling illegal operations will be placed on watchlist and reported to the CBN.
“This reckless practice often enabled by some fintech companies puts Nigeria’s financial system and citizens’ investments at risk. This must stop.”
