Botswana, Equatorial Guinea, three others exit AFCON

The list of casualties at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco continues to grow, with six nations now confirmed out of the tournament as the group phase approaches its conclusion.

Botswana were the earliest to bow out, suffering defeats in their first two outings to mathematically end their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.

Gabon and Equatorial Guinea soon followed the same path, each losing their opening pair of group matches to seal premature exits from the competition.

Zambia’s campaign was officially brought to an end on Monday night after a comprehensive 3–0 loss to tournament hosts Morocco, a result that left them unable to finish among the qualifiers.

Comoros also saw their journey come to a close despite completing all their group fixtures.

Their final points tally ranked them behind four other third-placed teams, making them the first side in that category to miss out on progression.

While those teams depart, six nations have already secured places in the Round of 16: Algeria, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt.

Attention now shifts to the remaining group matches, which will decide the last spots in the knockout phase of the tournament.
