Senegal’s AFCON appeal hearing set for October 8

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has fixed October 8 for the hearing of Senegal’s appeal against the Confederation of African Football’s decision to strip them of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title.

Senegal were initially crowned champions after defeating hosts Morocco 1-0 in the final in January. However, Caf later overturned the result and awarded the title to Morocco.

The controversy arose after Senegal’s players walked off the pitch when Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty with the match still tied at 0-0.

After a delay of approximately 17 minutes, the Senegal team returned to the field. Morocco’s Brahim Diaz failed to convert the penalty after his effort was saved, before Senegal’s Pape Gueye struck the decisive goal in extra time.

On March 25, Senegal filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas), asking the tribunal to overturn Caf’s ruling and restore them as the rightful AFCON champions.

Caf had ruled that Senegal forfeited the final by leaving the field and consequently awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory.

Neither Caf nor the Royal Moroccan Football Federation agreed to fast-track the proceedings, meaning the case will now be heard on October 8.

According to a Cas statement, the schedule follows the body’s normal procedural timeline.

Cas also confirmed that Caf and the FRMF did not request a public hearing, meaning the proceedings will be conducted behind closed doors at its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The court added that while it cannot specify when its final ruling will be delivered, the verdict will not be issued on the day of the hearing.
