Hundreds of youths gathered in front of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Memorial Stadium in Bauchi State on Thursday to protest against bad governance, as part of a nationwide movement.
The protesters, carrying placards with various demands, marched through the city, calling for the reversal of the fuel subsidy, food availability, and reduced school fees.
A heavy security presence was visible, with police, NSCDC, soldiers, and plainclothes personnel deployed to maintain order, according to Independent.
The protest turned violent when demonstrators approached the Emir’s palace, leading to security forces firing tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Protesters threw stones and pebbles at the palace, breaking some items and car windows, before being stopped by security operatives at the CBN roundabout.
After a two-hour standoff, the protesters dispersed without reaching the Government House, their intended destination.
The Bauchi protest is part of a nationwide movement against hunger and economic hardship, with demonstrations reported in various cities across Nigeria.
