The Federal Fire Service has reported that two people lost their lives and property valued at N1.59 billion was destroyed in Bauchi State due to fire incidents in 2025.
Umar Lawal, Public Relations Officer of the Bauchi State Fire Service, shared the statistics with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja. He said the service also saved four lives and property worth N2.86 billion across 167 fire incidents reported last year.
“The fire outbreaks affected public and government buildings, private homes, schools, markets, petrol and gas stations, as well as vehicles,” Lawal explained.
Breaking down the figures, Lawal said: “Public and government buildings suffered property losses of N23 million, though we were able to save assets worth N855.1 million in 10 incidents.
Private dwellings accounted for N605 million in losses and N1.4 billion saved in 80 cases. Educational institutions recorded N120 million in property destruction, while markets lost N45 million but N90 million worth of assets were rescued. Petrol and gas stations, and vehicles suffered further losses.”
Lawal attributed most fire incidents to electrical faults, power surges, improper storage of petroleum products, accidents, and dustbin fires.
He urged residents to take precautions, stating, “Overloading electrical appliances is dangerous and preventable. Proper care of electrical equipment can save lives, property, and the environment.”
He concluded, “Fire safety should be a priority in every aspect of daily life. Prevention is the most effective measure to reduce loss from fire outbreaks.”
