Lamine Yamal will miss the rest of the season with FC Barcelona but is expected to recover in time for the World Cup.
The 18-year-old forward picked up a left hamstring injury during Wednesday’s 1–0 win over Celta Vigo.
Yamal had put Barcelona ahead from the penalty spot in the 40th minute, but moments later he signalled to the bench before going down, clutching his left hamstring.
Medical staff assisted him off the pitch, and he went straight down the tunnel.
Barcelona confirmed the setback on Thursday, noting that Yamal “will follow a conservative treatment plan” and will be sidelined for the remainder of the league campaign, although he is “expected to return in time for the World Cup”.
The reigning La Liga champions currently sit top of the table, nine points ahead of rivals Real Madrid, whom they will host on May 10 as part of their final six fixtures.
Spain national football team are scheduled to open their World Cup campaign in Group H against Cape Verde on June 15, followed by matches against Saudi Arabia on June 21 and Uruguay on June 27.
