Super Falcons forward, Esther Okoronkwo, has voiced her frustration after missing out on the final shortlist for the 2025 CAF Women’s Player of the Year award.
Okoronkwo had been tipped as a strong contender following her brilliant outing at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria secured a historic tenth title.
The 28-year-old contributed one goal and six assists during the tournament, solidifying her impact.
She also enjoyed an impressive season at club level, playing a key role in AFC Toronto’s triumph as they captured the inaugural NSL Shield in September.
Although she initially featured among the 10 nominees, Okoronkwo was left out when CAF unveiled the final three contenders on Sunday.
Making the shortlist instead were her Super Falcons teammate Rasheedat Ajibade, along with Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy.
Reacting on social media, Okoronkwo shared her feelings in an Instagram post, saying, by“I remain grateful for the support across Africa. CAF’s decision is noted, but my focus stays on the pitch where recognition is earned not awarded. Awards don’t always reflect reality but the pitch never lies.”
