Angela Peters, a 56-year-old Australian grandmother of 12, has captured global attention after giving birth to twin girls with her 39-year-old Nigerian husband, Bright.
Speaking with The Sun UK, Peters revealed that she first came into contact with Bright in 2020 via a dating app, although she had initially been chatting with his older brother, Emeka, who resided in Senegal.
“I was actually talking to his brother at first,” she explained. “But when I saw a family photo and noticed Bright, it felt like a thunderbolt, I just knew he was the one.”
At the time, Bright was working as a chef in South Africa, while Angela was living in Australia. After nine months of virtual communication, she flew to Nigeria in February 2021, where they met in person and got married just nine days later in a small civil ceremony in Lagos.
Despite initial objections from her children, Angela was convinced her new partner was genuine. “The kids were horrified when I called to tell them, but I knew that once they met Bright, they’d understand,” she said.
Angela, a mother of five, divorced her former husband in 2019. Although she hadn’t initially planned on having more children, the prospect of motherhood again emerged when she realized Bright longed to be a father.
“He once told me we’d have twin girls together, and I just laughed,” she recounted. “I was already going through perimenopause, and it seemed impossible.”
Due to IVF age restrictions in Australia, where the cut-off is 52, Angela began exploring fertility options abroad. Her daughters declined to act as surrogates, and she briefly considered advising Bright to father a child with someone else.
“Luckily, fate had other plans,” she noted. During a visit to Nigeria in 2023, a friend of Bright’s introduced her to a fertility clinic in Lagos. Doctors there expressed confidence in her ability to carry a pregnancy using donor eggs and Bright’s sperm.
“They didn’t even flinch at my age,” Angela said. “They were willing to help us achieve our dream.”
In December 2023, she learned she was pregnant with twins. She gave birth to two healthy girls, Khorus and Knowyn, in August 2024.
Despite initial health concerns and criticism online, Angela described the experience as her “easiest pregnancy ever.” Her journey, documented on TikTok, received widespread attention.
“It was my daughters who suggested we share the pregnancy online,” Angela said. “We wanted to give hope to other women who feel it’s too late.”
One of her daughters, 28-year-old Deina, said she was initially wary of her mother’s relationship with Bright.
“I was afraid he was a scammer at first,” Deina admitted. “Then I was shocked when Mum asked if I’d be their surrogate. But after she went ahead with IVF in Nigeria and had such a smooth pregnancy, I couldn’t help but be proud. She’s amazing with the babies.”
Angela believes her story is a testament to resilience and second chances.
“To every woman dreaming of motherhood later in life, don’t give up,” she said. “Age shouldn’t be a barrier to love or to following your dreams.”
