ASUU declares two-week nationwide strike over unresolved demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has announced a two-week comprehensive warning strike across all public universities in Nigeria, beginning midnight, Monday, October 13, 2025, over unresolved issues with the Federal Government.

The declaration was made on Sunday by ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, during a press briefing held at the University of Abuja.

“Compatriots of the press, it goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on ground to stop the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on the 28th of September 2025,” Piwuna said.

He directed all ASUU branches nationwide to “withdraw their services with effect from midnight on Monday, October 13.”

According to him, the action will be “total and comprehensive”, as agreed upon at the union’s most recent National Executive Council meeting.

The latest industrial action comes amid renewed negotiations between ASUU and the Federal Government aimed at preventing another disruption in Nigeria’s tertiary education system.

Earlier in the week, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed in Abuja that the Federal Government was in the final phase of talks with ASUU and other university-based unions. The discussions focus on issues related to welfare, funding, and the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.

Alausa stated that President Bola Tinubu’s administration had already released ₦50 billion for the payment of Earned Academic Allowances and included another ₦150 billion in the 2025 budget for the Needs Assessment of universities, which would be disbursed in three tranches.

Despite these efforts, ASUU insists that the government has yet to meet its core demands, prompting the latest strike action.

Prof. Piwuna maintained that the union’s patience had been “stretched to the limit,” emphasizing that “the federal government must demonstrate sincerity and urgency in resolving the lingering issues that threaten the stability of public universities.”
