The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered a comprehensive and transparent probe into the reported assault of a police officer by soldiers stationed in the Mgbom N’Achara Community, located in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
This directive was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele.
Anele noted that a viral video circulating on social media platforms alleged that military personnel assaulted a police detective who was on duty during a traditional leadership election held in the community on May 1.
She explained that the army chief has called for a detailed investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the presence and behavior of the soldiers involved in the incident.
“This is in line with the Nigerian Army’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.
“While the investigation is still ongoing, we urge all law-abiding citizens to remain calm as details of the investigation will be made public to ensure transparency and accountability.
“Any personnel found guilty in connection with this sad development will be duly sanctioned, in line with extant military regulations and procedures,” she stated.
Anele further reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to professionalism and its constitutional duty, particularly when supporting civil authorities.
She emphasized that the army values the public’s trust and cooperation at all times and called on citizens to remain peaceful and continue to support the military as it executes its national security responsibilities with “integrity, professionalism, and dedication to national peace, security and stability.”
