Egypt proved that goals are not always necessary to get results. A disciplined and composed display earned the Pharaohs a 0-0 draw against Angola in Agadir, a result that was more than enough to secure top spot in Group B.
MnmnoThe stalemate delivered exactly what Egypt needed. With seven points from three matches, the record AFCON champions advanced to the knockout stage without fuss, prioritising efficiency over spectacle in a game they controlled intelligently.
Fully aware that a draw would seal qualification, Egypt avoided unnecessary risks.
They slowed the tempo, kept their defensive shape intact and managed key moments calmly, frustrating an Angola side desperate for a breakthrough.
Angola, however, were the more adventurous team. The Palancas Negras created the clearest openings, especially before the break, with Chico Banza, Antonio Maestro and M’Bala Nzola all coming close to breaking the deadlock.
Egypt’s goalkeeper, Mohamed Oufa Shobeir, remained alert, producing timely interventions as his defence stood firm under sustained pressure.
The absence of Mohamed Salah once again left Egypt short of attacking bite. Zizo attempted to inject urgency in the final third, but poor decision-making and heavy touches prevented the Pharaohs from turning possession into real danger.
As the match progressed, Egypt shifted their focus towards game management and quick counters rather than sustained attacking play.
For Angola, the goalless draw was a bitter outcome. Pedro Gonçalves’ men finished the group with just two points, leaving their qualification hopes resting on the slim possibility of progressing as one of the best third-placed teams.
Despite their positive intent, a lack of clinical finishing ultimately cost them.
Egypt, meanwhile, march on with confidence and experience on their side.
While the attacking sharpness will need improvement in the knockout rounds, the Pharaohs have completed their first mission, advancing as group winners.
For Angola, AFCON dreams now hang by a thread.
