Adidas unveils sensor-equipped Trionda 2026 World Cup ball

At every FIFA World Cup, the unveiling of the official match ball has remained one of the tournament’s most anticipated moments, and for the 2026 edition, Adidas has introduced “Trionda” — a futuristic football packed with cutting-edge technology and symbolic design features.

From the iconic Telstar used at the 2018 World Cup in Russia to Brazil’s Brazuca in 2014, official tournament balls have consistently generated excitement among football fans.

The unforgettable Jabulani, used during South Africa 2010, remains one of the most controversial.

While many goalkeepers criticised its unpredictable movement, attackers embraced it, with Uruguay legend Diego Forlan among those who thrived with the ball.

At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Al Rihla took innovation to another level as the first World Cup ball equipped with semi-AI technology for enhanced match analysis and offside detection.

However, football enthusiasts may now have even more to marvel at with Trionda, the official ball for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Adidas described the ball during its unveiling as “a connected piece of engineering designed to handle the unique physics of North American altitudes while celebrating a historic three-nation host union”.

The name Trionda combines the prefix “tri”, representing the three host nations, with “onda”, the Spanish word for wave. The concept symbolises the unity of Canada, Mexico and the United States, as well as the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coastlines connected to the tournament.

Unlike previous World Cup balls, Trionda features just four lightweight panels, the fewest ever used on an official World Cup match ball.

The reduced number of seams creates a more uniform surface, while deep seams inspired by golf-ball dimples improve aerodynamic stability and ensure a more predictable flight path.

The ball’s surface also carries subtle symbols representing the host nations.

One of Trionda’s most remarkable features is its charging requirement. A fully charged ball, after 90 minutes on its charging station, can operate for up to six hours.

Its suspended motion sensor tracks every kick, touch and deflection in real time, transmitting data to the VAR system 500 times per second.

According to FIFA, the technology supports Semi-Automated Offside Technology by pinpointing the exact moment the ball is played with millisecond accuracy, allowing officials to resolve close offside calls much faster.

Trionda also reflects the identity of each host country through its colour scheme — red for Canada, green for Mexico and blue for the United States.

For sustainability, Adidas used water-based glues and inks in the production process.

The design also incorporates national symbols such as Canada’s maple leaf, Mexico’s golden eagle and the United States’ five-pointed star.

Gold embellishments inspired by the FIFA World Cup Trophy complete the design, which Adidas described as its “most visually playful ball yet”, created with both players and television audiences in mind.

“The name TRIONDA can be translated from Spanish as “three waves”, and, alongside other unique and innovative design features, celebrates the fact that, for the first time, three host countries – Canada, Mexico and the United States – are uniting to host the FIFA World Cup™.

“The ball’s vibrant design features a red, green and blue colour scheme that pays homage to the three host countries, while a brand-new four-panel construction with fluid geometry replicates the waves referenced in the ball’s name.

“These panels connect to form a triangle in the centre of the ball in a nod to the historic union of the three host nations. Iconography that represents each host country adorns the ball, with the maple leaf for Canada, an eagle for Mexico and a star for the United States, while gold embellishments pay tribute to the FIFA World Cup Trophy, underlining the significance of the stage provided by FIFA’s flagship tournament.

“TRIONDA boasts several key performance innovations. The four-panel construction incorporates intentionally deep seams, creating a surface that produces optimal in-flight stability by ensuring sufficient and evenly distributed drag as the ball travels through the air. Additionally, embossed icons that are only visible up-close elevate grip when striking or dribbling the ball in wet or humid conditions.

“Connected ball technology again features in the Official Match Ball of the FIFA World Cup, with a state-of-the-art 500Hz motion sensor chip delivering insight into every element of the ball’s movement. This technology sends precise data to the video assistant referee system in real time, enhancing match officials’ decision-making, including in relation to offside incidents.”
