A 28-year-old man, Ibrahim Augustine, has been arrested by the Adamawa State Police Command for allegedly stabbing his 21-year-old neighbour, Haggai Markus, to death following a disagreement over roasted meat.
The incident reportedly occurred around 8pm on Wednesday, November 4, at Mararaban Vimtim in Mubi North Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroji, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Thursday.
According to the police spokesperson, the disagreement started over roasted meat allegedly taken from a butcher’s table.
He said the argument escalated when Augustine allegedly brought out a knife and stabbed Markus in the chest.
Nguroji explained that the victim’s father, identified as Markus Gabo, reported the incident to the police at about 8:45pm on the same day.
He said officers from the Mubi North Divisional Police Headquarters visited the scene and found the victim lying dead in a pool of blood.
The police spokesperson added that a knife suspected to have been used in the attack was recovered as evidence, while the suspect was arrested and taken into custody.
He said the victim’s body was subsequently moved to the Federal Medical Centre, Mubi, where a medical doctor confirmed his death.
According to the statement, the suspect and the case file will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police in Adamawa State, CP Kabir Hassan, expressed condolences to the victim’s family and assured them that justice would be pursued.
He also appealed to residents to resolve disagreements peacefully and report disputes to the police rather than resorting to violence.
The incident comes days after another fatal attack involving neighbours was reported in Akinlalu, Osun State, where a farmer, Samson Gabriel, was allegedly hacked to death with a machete following a disagreement over money.
