Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has granted pardon to Sunday Jackson, who had been sentenced to death for killing his attacker, along with seven other inmates across custodial centres in the country.
Jackson, previously on death row at the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre, Abuja, was among three prisoners granted full pardon.
The others are Joseph Eugene, held at the Yola New Medium Security Custodial Centre, and Maxwell Ibrahim, currently serving his sentence at the Kaduna Medium Security Custodial Centre.
The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday night in Yola, noting that the gesture was part of activities marking the Christmas and New Year festivities.
According to the statement, five additional inmates were granted remission of the remainder of their sentences.
They include Joshua James Audo, Adamu Ibrahim, Mohammed Abubakar, Ibrahim Usman, and Saidu Abubakar, who are serving at the Numan and Jada Medium Security Custodial Centres.
Explaining the decision, Fintiri said, “In the exercise of my prerogative of mercy, as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and in line with the recommendations of the Adamawa State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, I have granted pardon to three persons and directed the remission of the remainder of the sentences of five others who have served various jail terms and have significantly demonstrated good conduct over the years.”
