Napoli hold Serie A leaders Lazio to 1-1 draw

Napoli fought back to secure a 1-1 draw against Lazio in their Serie A clash at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Sunday, with Alfonso Pedraza’s own goal cancelling Davide Frattesi’s first-half strike.

The result offered some relief to Napoli manager Massimiliano Allegri, who had come under mounting pressure following consecutive defeats to Juventus and Porto.

Lazio, meanwhile, maintained their unbeaten run at the top of the league standings.

Lazio started brightly, with Gustav Isaksen threatening the Napoli defence in the opening minutes.

The winger fired narrowly wide before goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić produced a superb save to deny his curling effort.

The Napoli shot-stopper also kept out Josip Šutalo’s header from a corner.

The visitors eventually took the lead in the 28th minute when Tijjani Noslin initiated a counter-attack and set up Frattesi, who arrived in the box to fire a low shot past Milinković-Savić.

The goal was Frattesi’s fourth of the season.

Napoli nearly restored parity before the break, but Rasmus Højlund’s close-range effort in the 42nd minute was denied by Lazio goalkeeper Christos Mandas, who scrambled the ball away from the goal line.

The hosts equalised three minutes into the second half when Noa Lang delivered a cross from the left flank.

Pedraza, attempting to prevent Scott McTominay from connecting with the ball, inadvertently diverted it into his own net.

Napoli pressed for a winning goal, but Mandas proved difficult to beat, making crucial saves against McTominay and Kevin De Bruyne.

Diogo Leite also cleared a loose ball off the line as the hosts continued to threaten.

Both sides created further opportunities in the closing stages, with Mandas denying substitute Lorenzo Lucca while Milinković-Savić kept out Matteo Cancellieri’s attempt.

The draw moved Lazio to 29 points, two ahead of Roma, while Napoli remained on 15 points.

The result also marked Napoli’s first Serie A comeback to earn a point after conceding first this season, although they have now gone eight consecutive league matches without a clean sheet.
