Three die, seven injured in Ogun road crashes

Three persons have been killed and seven others injured in two separate road accidents on the Sagamu-Ikorodu Expressway and Ota–Idiroko Road in Ogun State.

The crashes occurred on Saturday at the Kam Steel axis of the Sagamu–Ikorodu Expressway and the Agarawu, Winners axis of the Ota–Idiroko Road.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incidents in a traffic update on Saturday.

Akinbiyi said the first accident occurred at about 4:10 pm at the Kam Steel axis of the Sagamu–Ikorodu Highway, where a woman died and two others sustained injuries after a tricycle collided with a patrol van.

According to him, the patrol van emerged from the Kam Steel access road onto the highway and hit the tricycle, causing it to somersault.

He stated, “The pick-up van came out of the Kam Steel Road into the highway and collided with the tricycle, which somersaulted as a result.

“Eight people were involved; one female adult died while two other female adults sustained varying degrees of injuries.”

Akinbiyi said the injured victims were taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, while the corpse of the deceased was deposited at the hospital’s morgue.

He added that the second crash occurred at about 3:25 pm at the Agarawu, Winners axis of the Ota–Idiroko Road, involving a yellow Howo truck and a TVS tricycle.

The TRACE spokesperson said the accident claimed the lives of two persons, a man and a woman, while five others sustained injuries.

He attributed the crash to brake failure, which reportedly caused the truck driver to lose control and collide with the tricycle.

“According to the eyewitness account, the brake of the Howo truck failed, and the driver lost control and collided with the tricycle.

“Nine people were involved; two persons, including a male adult and a female adult, died while seven others were injured,” he stated.

Akinbiyi said the injured victims had been taken to the hospital before rescue officials arrived at the scene.

He noted that the relatives of one of the deceased persons had claimed the body, while the other corpse was deposited at the General Hospital morgue, Ifo.

The TRACE spokesperson said the agency’s operatives, alongside other emergency responders, intervened at both accident scenes to restore traffic flow.

He added, “While TRACE, FRSC, and the Police commiserate with families of the deceased, motorists are again admonished to make safety their watchword by servicing and adequately maintaining their vehicles as and when due in view of the attendant consequences of non-compliance,” he concluded.
