Former United States President, Barack Obama, has said Americans are calling for political leadership that promotes unity and delivers practical solutions to their challenges following sweeping victories by Democrats in the country’s midterm elections.
Obama made this known in a post on his X handle while reacting to the election results, which saw Democrats take control of both chambers of Congress.
He commended the candidates who contested across different parts of the country, noting that their diverse backgrounds and political views did not prevent them from working towards common goals.
According to him, the victories were made possible by candidates who prioritised public service and the interests of the people they represented.
According to the Associated Press, one of the major setbacks for Republicans was in North Carolina, where Democrat Roy Cooper defeated Trump-backed candidate Michael Whatley in the US Senate race.
In South Carolina, Democrat Annie Andrews also defeated Republican Darline Graham, ending a 28-year period without a Democratic representative from the state in the Senate.
Texas equally recorded a significant political shift as Democrat James Talarico defeated his Republican opponent, a development described as a major setback for Trump’s influence in the state.
In Ohio, Democratic candidate Dr Amy Acton defeated Trump-backed Vivek Ramaswamy in the gubernatorial election.
Ramaswamy’s campaign was reportedly affected by controversies surrounding an advertisement featuring Acton’s estranged mother, who accused her of misrepresenting her upbringing and urged voters to reject her candidacy.
