Serie A: Parma stun Atalanta 3-0 to hand Gilardino first win

Parma secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Atalanta in Serie A on Monday, handing head coach Alberto Gilardino his first win since taking charge of the club.

Giovanni Fabbian, Davide Zappacosta’s own goal and Simone Lontani’s superb long-range effort sealed the victory for Parma at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia in Bergamo.

Atalanta, managed by Maurizio Sarri, dominated possession in the opening stages but struggled to convert their chances.

Charles De Ketelaere came close on several occasions, while Ederson and Nikola Krstović also threatened the Parma goal.

Parma broke the deadlock in the 41st minute when Fabbian headed home from close range following a corner kick delivered by Vincent Sierro.

Goalkeeper Giovanni Daffara also made an important save to deny Nicola Zalewski before the interval.

The visitors doubled their advantage just two minutes into the second half after Atalanta defender Zappacosta inadvertently turned a cross into his own net.

Parma extended their lead in the 58th minute through Lontani, who produced an excellent curling effort from outside the penalty area to beat Marco Carnesecchi and make it 3-0.

Atalanta attempted to stage a comeback through several substitutions, but Daffara remained outstanding between the posts.

He denied Krstović multiple times, while Mario Pašalić struck the crossbar as Parma maintained their clean sheet.

The result marked a significant boost for Parma, who had been struggling in the relegation zone before the encounter.

For Atalanta, the defeat further compounded their difficulties amid an ongoing injury crisis.
