Lazio secured a sixth consecutive Serie A victory on Sunday after substitute Andrea Pinamonti scored a late winner in their 2-1 triumph over 10-man Cagliari at the Stadio Olimpico.
The victory moved Gennaro Gattuso’s side three points clear at the top of the table following Inter Milan’s defeat to city rivals AC Milan in the Derby della Madonnina.
Cagliari took a surprising lead through M’Bala Nzola, who finished from close range after Alieu Fadera’s delivery fell kindly into his path following a deflection off Reda Belahyane.
Lazio responded nine minutes before half-time when Gustav Isaksen produced an excellent finish, curling a left-footed effort from the edge of the penalty area into the top-right corner to restore parity.
The hosts dominated much of the second half as they searched for a winner, but Cagliari goalkeeper Elia Caprile produced several important saves to keep his team in contention.
Kenneth Taylor came close with a free-kick and another effort that narrowly missed the target, while Oliver Provstgaard also headed over as Lazio increased the pressure.
Their persistence eventually paid off in the 83rd minute when Pinamonti rose to head home Alfonso Pedraza’s cross, sending the home supporters into celebration.
Cagliari’s chances of recovering from the setback suffered another blow when Adam Obert received his second yellow card for a foul on Isaksen, leaving the visitors with 10 men.
The result extended Lazio’s winning streak in Serie A to six matches, their best run in the competition since February 2021.
Gattuso’s men have also scored 24 goals in their opening 10 league matches, while their latest success continued an impressive home record against Cagliari, having won 14 of their last 15 Serie A meetings at the Stadio Olimpico.
