Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, ending their long wait for a Premier League win at the venue and moving to the top of the table.
Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute after capitalising on a costly mistake by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who failed to complete a pass to defender Jérémy Jacquet.
Arsenal quickly took advantage of the loose ball, with Noni Madueke and Declan Rice combining to set up Havertz, who calmly finished at the far post.
The goal was Havertz’s third in the Premier League this season and his 46th in the competition, making him the highest-scoring German player in its history, surpassing former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gündogan.
Liverpool responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser but struggled to convert their attacking possession into clear-cut opportunities.
The hosts also had a penalty appeal rejected after Jurrien Timber appeared to pull Alexander Isak’s shirt as the Swedish striker attempted to connect with a header.
Video Assistant Referee officials did not award a spot kick.
Despite Liverpool’s pressure, Arsenal maintained their defensive discipline and limited the home side’s chances, with goalkeeper David Raya not required to make a save throughout the encounter.
The victory marked a significant result for Mikel Arteta’s side, who demonstrated their ability to protect a narrow advantage against the reigning champions and strengthen their position in the title race.
