Carabao Cup: Everton beat Newcastle 3-1 to reach quarter-finals

Everton have booked their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after defeating Newcastle United 3-1 at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday, setting up a last-eight meeting with League Two side Fleetwood Town.

The Toffees secured the victory despite being without England international Jack Grealish, who was dropped from the squad following a breach of club discipline over an unauthorised absence from training.

James Garner opened the scoring in the 34th minute, capitalising on a defensive error before firing a low shot into the far corner for his first goal since January.

Everton doubled their advantage shortly before half-time through Hayden Hackney, who finished from close range after the hosts launched a swift counterattack.

The goal was the midfielder’s first for the club since joining from Middlesbrough during the summer.

Thierno Barry extended Everton’s lead in the 69th minute, finding space inside the penalty area before converting Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s cross.

The strike was Barry’s seventh goal in 11 appearances this season, further strengthening Everton’s grip on the contest.

Newcastle, who won the competition in 2025, struggled to find a response despite making several attacking changes at the break.

Dan Burn headed home in the 88th minute to reduce the deficit, but his effort came too late to prevent the visitors from exiting the competition.

The Magpies had threatened early in the encounter, with Harvey Barnes, Joe Willock and Fabian Schär testing goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

However, Everton grew into the game and punished their opponents’ defensive lapses to secure a comfortable victory.

The result puts Everton within two matches of a place in the final four as they continue their pursuit of their first major trophy since winning the FA Cup in 1995.

The two sides will meet again in the Premier League on Monday, when Newcastle host Everton on Tyneside.
