Serie A: Genoa shock Juventus 2-0 to deepen woes

Genoa stunned Juventus with a 2-0 victory in their Serie A clash on Wednesday, scoring twice in the first half to condemn the visitors to another disappointing result at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Kingsley Ehizibue opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Tommaso Baldanzi doubled Genoa’s advantage in the 28th minute, punishing defensive errors by Juventus.

Juventus, managed by Luciano Spalletti, struggled to find their rhythm despite enjoying more possession.

The visitors also had to contend with an injury crisis that ruled out several key players, including Kenan Yildiz, Khephren Thuram, Manuel Locatelli and Francisco Conceicao.

Genoa threatened early through Baldanzi, whose effort was deflected for a corner before the hosts took the lead.

A low delivery from the midfielder travelled across the Juventus penalty area and reached Ehizibue at the far post, where he finished despite an attempted clearance by Andrea Cambiaso.

Juventus failed to learn from an earlier warning when Milutin Osmajic ran onto a long goal kick but could only hit the side-netting under pressure from Pierre Kalulu.

The hosts capitalised on another defensive lapse shortly afterwards.

Vitinha intercepted Kalulu’s attempted clearance and set up Baldanzi, who finished to give Genoa a comfortable two-goal cushion.

Genoa nearly extended their lead before the break, with Morten Frendrup sending a pass across goal that narrowly missed Osmajic.

Juventus, meanwhile, wasted an opportunity to reduce the deficit when Kalulu fired wide from close range following a pass from Weston McKennie.

Spalletti introduced Nick Woltemade and Edon Zhegrova at the start of the second half in an attempt to revive his side, but Juventus continued to struggle in the final third.

Zhegrova later forced Genoa goalkeeper Justin Bijlow into a difficult save with a deflected effort from the edge of the penalty area, while Gleison Bremer headed over from a corner.

Juventus came close to scoring in stoppage time when a free-kick touched on for Teun Koopmeiners deflected off Johan Vasquez and struck the underside of the crossbar without crossing the goal line.

The defeat leaves Juventus facing further questions over their performances, while Genoa strengthened their momentum after securing consecutive home victories against Fiorentina and Venezia.
