Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, scored twice to inspire Galatasaray to a 2-1 victory over Fenerbahçe in the Turkish Süper Lig derby on Monday, helping his side return to the top of the table.
The Nigerian forward gave Galatasaray the lead in the 29th minute after receiving a pass from Barış Yılmaz before firing past the Fenerbahçe goalkeeper.
Osimhen doubled the advantage shortly before half-time, heading home a delivery from Davinson Sánchez to put the hosts firmly in control after an impressive first-half display.
Galatasaray continued to dominate after the restart, with Osimhen appearing to complete his hat-trick.
However, the effort was ruled out for offside, denying the striker an opportunity to claim a third goal.
The home side came close to extending their lead again when Ismail Jakobs sent a header against the post as Galatasaray maintained their attacking pressure.
Fenerbahçe reduced the deficit after the hour mark through İrfan Can Kahveci, who produced a spectacular overhead kick despite struggling to control the ball initially.
The goal gave the visitors renewed hope, forcing Galatasaray to defend their advantage during the closing stages of the encounter.
Despite the late pressure, Galatasaray held on to secure all three points, returning to the summit of the Turkish Süper Lig and opening a six-point gap over their rivals, Fenerbahçe.
