Athletic Bilbao fans boo Carvajal over past injury to Berchiche
Athletic Bilbao supporters subjected Getafe defender Dani Carvajal to sustained boos and verbal abuse during their side’s 4-0 victory over Getafe, with memories of his previous clash with defender Yuri Berchiche fuelling the hostility.
The Spanish right-back faced a hostile reception from the stands throughout the encounter, with supporters expressing their displeasure whenever he touched the ball.
The animosity dates back to 2023, when Carvajal was playing for Real Madrid and was involved in a challenge with Berchiche during a match against Athletic Bilbao.
The tackle left the Basque club’s defender with a fractured fibula, an injury that has remained a source of resentment among some of the club’s supporters.
Despite the passage of time, many Athletic Bilbao fans have continued to associate Carvajal with the incident, explaining the intensity of the reception he received during Sunday’s encounter against Getafe.
However, the tension among supporters contrasted with the cordial exchange between the two defenders after the final whistle.
Berchiche approached Carvajal, and the pair exchanged words before embracing.
The gesture suggested that the players had moved beyond the incident, despite the lingering anger among sections of the Athletic Bilbao fanbase.
Athletic Bilbao’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Getafe was therefore accompanied by scenes that highlighted the difference between the players’ relationship and the feelings of supporters who have not forgotten the injury.
