Atletico Madrid secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Espanyol on Saturday, thanks to Alex Baena’s late goal, to strengthen their push for the La Liga title.
Baena struck in the 89th minute, firing home from the edge of the penalty area after receiving a pass from Julian Alvarez to give Diego Simeone’s side all three points.
The victory extended Atletico’s winning streak to six matches across all competitions and moved them to within two points of league leaders Barcelona, who are scheduled to face Real Betis later on Saturday.
The encounter at Cornella was closely contested, with both teams creating opportunities before the break.
However, Espanyol came closest to scoring when Leandro Cabrera’s effort hit the crossbar.
Atletico also struck the woodwork after the hour mark, with Marcos Llorente’s long-range attempt crashing against the crossbar.
Espanyol captain Javi Puado returned to action after a lengthy absence caused by a knee injury.
The forward made his first appearance since January after coming on as a substitute.
Alvarez also made an impact after entering the game from the bench, continuing his efforts to regain his best form following a summer in which he reportedly sought a move away from the Spanish capital.
Atletico eventually found the breakthrough through Baena, whose powerful finish proved decisive in a game where clear-cut chances were limited.
Espanyol attempted to salvage a point in stoppage time, but Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak produced an important save to deny Pol Lozano and preserve the visitors’ advantage.
The result further strengthens Atletico’s position in the title race as they continue to put pressure on Barcelona at the top of the standings.
Meanwhile, fourth-placed Real Madrid are scheduled to host Sevilla on Sunday as the La Liga campaign continues.
