Former Manchester City and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper, Shay Given, has married his long-time partner, Rebecca Gibson, at Westminster Abbey in London, United Kingdom, after receiving special permission to hold the ceremony at the historic venue because of her family connection to the building.
The couple tied the knot on Saturday, October 10, in a private ceremony attended by close family members and friends.
They later shared photographs of their wedding on social media, attracting congratulatory messages from footballers, celebrities and other well-wishers.
Westminster Abbey is one of Britain’s most historic religious landmarks and has hosted several royal ceremonies, including the 2011 wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
Queen Elizabeth II also married Prince Philip at the abbey in 1947.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the couple secured permission to marry at the venue because Rebecca’s grandfather held the position of Surveyor of the Fabric at Westminster Abbey, a role responsible for the building’s care and maintenance.
He was later appointed a Lieutenant of the Victorian Order by the monarchy.
The family connection, alongside permission from the Crown, the Dean and the Archbishop of Canterbury, enabled the couple to hold their wedding at the prestigious site.
The Very Reverend David Hoyle, Dean of Westminster, officiated at the ceremony.
The celebrations continued at Hotel Cafe Royal on Regent Street in London, where guests gathered in the venue’s Pompadour Ballroom for the reception.
Despite the London setting, the wedding reflected the couple’s connections to north-west England, where they have lived in Cheshire for about a decade.
They first met in Manchester, while Given proposed to Rebecca in 2015 during a holiday in Los Angeles, United States.
Rebecca wore a lace wedding gown designed by Tom Sebastian and purchased from Knutsford Wedding Gallery.
Her dress featured a corseted bodice, while a lace-embellished veil and a bouquet of white roses completed her bridal look.
Given, 50, wore a black velvet tuxedo and bow tie.
Rebecca was accompanied by three bridesmaids: the couple’s daughters, Gracie, 10, and Cassie, nine, as well as Given’s 19-year-old daughter, Sienna, from his first marriage.
Entertainment at the reception was provided by Manchester singer Cole Page, while guests included former Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane, who played alongside Given at international level.
Born in Donegal, Ireland, Given earned 134 international caps for his country, making him one of its most-capped players. Only former striker Keane, with 146 appearances, has represented the Republic of Ireland more times.
Given enjoyed a lengthy career in the English Premier League, representing clubs including Newcastle United, Manchester City and Aston Villa.
He retired in 2017 after a spell with Stoke City.
Following the release of the wedding photographs, several public figures and friends congratulated the couple. Olivia Stones, wife of former Manchester City defender John Stones, wrote: “Absolute perfection.”
Former footballers Robbie Fowler and Erik Pieters also sent their congratulations, while Boyzone singer Ronan Keating wrote: “Congratulations guys.”
Friend Shari Royle said, “I’m so beyond excited to see these absolutely beautiful pictures. You both look gorgeous what a day to remember in THE most incredible venue can’t wait to see you soon for the biggest celebratory hugs.”
Mark Devlin added, “What an incredible couple of days, filled with so much love, laughter and happiness. Truly unforgettable memories, thanks to you both.”
Photographer Emily Robinson also commented, “What a mega day… every little detail just perfection.”
The wedding also inspired playful comments from football fans, with one writing, “Mrs G is in safe hands,” while another joked: “I guess she is a keeper too, congrats!”
