At least 139 migrants, including children, have died after a boat carrying people from Djibouti to Yemen capsized, according to the United Nations.
According to Reuters, the vessel was carrying about 305 people when the accident occurred, leaving scores dead and many others missing, the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) said.
The disaster highlights the dangers faced by migrants travelling along the Horn of Africa and Yemen route in search of better economic opportunities and living conditions.
The IOM said the victims included children, while rescue and recovery efforts were underway following the incident.
Photographs from the scene showed parts of the capsized vessel floating in the water, IOM workers receiving migrants and authorities inspecting the shoreline.
A shoe believed to belong to one of the victims was also seen on the shore.
The route between the Horn of Africa and Yemen is a major migration corridor, frequently used by people attempting to reach Gulf countries in search of employment.
However, migrants travelling along the route face risks, including dangerous sea crossings, exploitation and abuse.
The latest tragedy underscores the persistent dangers of irregular migration and the need for stronger measures to protect vulnerable people undertaking perilous journeys.
