Tennis: Djokovic backs Sinner’s early season exit

Serbian tennis star, Novak Djokovic, has backed Jannik Sinner’s decision to end his 2026 season early, saying the world number one was right to prioritise his long-term recovery from a knee injury.

Sinner, who has not played since defeating Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final on July 12, has missed the North American hardcourt swing, the US Open and the ongoing Asian swing as he continues his recovery.

The 25-year-old Italian will also miss the European indoor season and the ATP Finals in Turin, where he has won the title in each of the last two years.

His absence has given Germany’s Alexander Zverev an opportunity to finish the year as the world’s top-ranked player.

Djokovic, speaking to reporters in Shanghai on Thursday, said Sinner’s decision was a sensible one, particularly because rushing back could affect his long-term career.

“But at the same time, he has to think long-term,” Djokovic said.

“That’s smart because as someone that always tried to have the big picture in my mind, I really support that kind of thinking and mindset.

“It’s important that you give yourself more years to your career, so you have more chances to accomplish all of your objectives.”

The 39-year-old Djokovic, who previously endured a lengthy injury layoff following elbow surgery in 2018, also explained that returning from an injury involves more than simply regaining physical fitness.

“Of course, physically, if you’re ready, you’re ready,” he said. “But then it’s mental. You know, you’re on the court and you’re thinking, ‘Am I really completely healed and free to make this run’.”

Djokovic arrived in Shanghai after winning the China Open title on Tuesday.

The 10th seed is scheduled to begin his Masters campaign against Hubert Hurkacz on Friday.
