Poland captain, Robert Lewandowski, scored a hat-trick as his side thrashed Romania 6-0 in the UEFA Nations League on Friday to record their first win of the campaign.
The 38-year-old striker opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 24th minute in Warsaw before doubling Poland’s advantage two minutes after the interval.
Przemysław Frankowski then made it 3-0 two minutes later when his effort took a deflection off Romania defender Virgil Ghiță and ended up in the net.
Piotr Zieliński, making his 112th appearance for Poland, added a fourth in the 62nd minute, while defender Jan Bednarek struck four minutes later to extend the lead to 5-0.
Lewandowski completed his hat-trick in the 86th minute to seal a comprehensive victory for the hosts.
The result also saw Lewandowski extend his international tally to 92 goals in a record 170 appearances for Poland, further strengthening his position as the country’s all-time leading goalscorer.
The victory moved Poland to four points from three matches and kept them in contention for promotion to League A, the top tier of the Nations League.
Poland had opened their campaign with a goalless draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina before losing 3-1 away to Sweden.
They will travel to Zenica to face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday, but will be without Lewandowski after the captain received his second yellow card of the campaign against Romania.
The winners of Group 4 will earn automatic promotion to League A, while the runners-up will enter the promotion play-offs.
