Hajj: Nigeria secures 10,000 additional slots for 2027 pilgrimage

Nigeria’s allocation for the 2027 Hajj has increased to 60,000 pilgrims following the approval of an additional 10,000 slots by the Saudi Arabian authorities.

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, announced the development on Thursday, saying the additional allocation followed sustained diplomatic engagements between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia.

According to the commission, 7,500 of the new slots have been allocated to state Muslim pilgrims’ welfare boards, agencies and commissions, while the remaining 2,500 will go to seven lead tour operator companies.

NAHCON Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and the Saudi authorities for the increase.

Yusuf said the additional slots reflected the cordial relationship between both countries and reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to ensuring transparency in the administration of the pilgrimage.

He said, “NAHCON remains committed to ensuring that Hajj remains affordable and accessible to Nigerians, while maintaining high standards of service delivery, accountability and operational efficiency.”

The chairman also assured intending pilgrims that the commission would work with relevant Nigerian and Saudi authorities to ensure effective coordination and protect the welfare and interests of Nigerian pilgrims.

Before the latest increase, Nigeria had been allocated 50,000 slots for the 2027 Hajj.

The initial allocation comprised 35,000 places for government-sponsored pilgrims and 15,000 slots for licensed tour operators.

NAHCON had earlier disclosed that intending pilgrims were required to have their biometric information uploaded to the designated Nusuk-Masar platform by September 26, in line with requirements from Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.

With the additional allocation, the commission is expected to adjust its arrangements, including the timeline for biometric registration and other preparations for the pilgrimage.
