AFCON qualifier: Rwanda beat Cape Verde 2-1 in comeback win

Rwanda fought back from a goal down to defeat Cape Verde 2-1 away on Tuesday and maintain their perfect start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Amavubi fell behind in the 40th minute when Gilson Benchimol converted Ryan Mendes’ delivery to give the hosts the lead in Praia.

Rwanda, however, responded before the break, with Claude Niyomugabo firing home from the edge of the box in first-half stoppage time to restore parity.

The visitors completed the turnaround seven minutes after the restart when Joy-Lance Mickels delivered a dangerous ball into the area and Elie Iradukunda turned it into the net to put Rwanda ahead.

Cape Verde pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but were unable to break through Rwanda’s defence.

Goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari made a crucial save in the 79th minute to deny the hosts.

Niyomugabo nearly turned the ball into his own net three minutes later while attempting to clear a Cape Verde attack, but Rwanda survived the late pressure to secure all three points.

The result gives Rwanda six points from their opening two qualifying matches, having started the campaign with a 3-1 victory over Liberia.
