Senegal secured their first victory in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after beating Ethiopia 1-0 at the Bahir Dar National Stadium on Tuesday.
Ibrahim Mbaye scored the only goal of the encounter in the 10th minute, converting a pass from his Aston Villa teammate Nicolas Jackson to put Senegal ahead.
The goal proved decisive as Ethiopia struggled to find a way back into the game despite creating opportunities during the encounter.
Senegal goalkeeper Yéhvann Diouf played a key role in preserving the lead, producing a crucial save in the 57th minute to deny Kenean Markneh from close range.
The hosts continued to press for an equaliser but Senegal’s defence held firm to secure all three points away from home.
The result also gave Senegal head coach Patrick Vieira his first win since taking charge of the national team. Vieira’s opening qualifier ended in a 1-1 draw against Mozambique.
Senegal now have four points from their opening two matches in Group J, while Ethiopia remain without a point after two defeats, having also lost 1-0 to Sudan in their first game.
