Giroud hints at retirement by end of season

Former France striker, Olivier Giroud, has indicated that he could bring his illustrious playing career to an end when the current season concludes.

Giroud, who will turn 40 on Wednesday, made the revelation in an interview with French newspaper L’Equipe, saying he believes this is “very probably” his final season as a professional footballer.

“As a player, I think it is very probably my last season,” the Lille forward said.

“That’s why I’m making the most of every moment,” he added.

Giroud became France’s all-time leading goalscorer at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar before his record was surpassed by Kylian Mbappe earlier this year.

He finished his international career with 57 goals in 137 appearances for Les Bleus, earning his final cap in 2024.

The striker was part of France’s 2018 World Cup-winning squad and enjoyed a decorated club career, winning league titles with Montpellier in France and AC Milan in Italy.

His club honours also include the 2021 Champions League with Chelsea and four FA Cup triumphs, including three during his time with Arsenal.

Giroud began his professional career with Grenoble in the French second division in 2006 before going on to establish himself as one of France’s most accomplished strikers.
