I never know what I’ll say on stage — Segun Johnson

Popular Nigerian singer and entertainer, Segun Johnson, has revealed that he deliberately avoids rehearsing his stage routines because he believes spontaneity is what keeps his performances authentic and engaging.

Johnson disclosed this in an interview with Saturday Beats, where he spoke about his creative process, creating memorable moments for audiences and how he recovers after performances.

The entertainer said his ability to improvise on stage had become a major part of his brand, explaining that he often develops catchy expressions and hype lines in the moment.

“I have always been spontaneous on stage and used to create hype lines out of creativity. Later on, I had the temptation of rehearsing before events, but I didn’t do that.

“I was intentional about being spontaneous. I believe that way, my brand as an entertainer can be authentic, natural and unpredictable,” he said.

Johnson also explained that creating an unforgettable performance goes beyond simply following a prepared routine. According to him, entertainers must be alert to unexpected moments that occur during events and know how to turn them into memorable experiences.

He said, “The difference between just performing and creating everlasting moments is in paying attention to remarkable occurrences.

“During every event, there is always a moment that requires exploration. Most performers might not be able to identify such moments, but I think this is where I have an edge.”

The singer noted that such opportunities could occur within seconds, stressing that performers must be attentive enough to recognise and maximise them.

“Sometimes, such moments last for just 15 seconds during a two-hour performance. It is left to the performer to be attentive enough to know when to maximise an occurrence and turn it into a remarkable moment that will create everlasting impressions,” he added.

On how he unwinds after his energetic performances, Johnson said he completely disconnects from social interactions and other activities.

“After every performance and event, I switch off completely. I don’t even have the tolerance to listen to the radio in the car or receive calls. I always switch off everything, including physically, mentally and socially,” he said.

Asked what he would do if his creativity ever stopped flowing, Johnson expressed confidence that his inspiration would remain intact because he believes his talent comes from God.

“The creativity will not stop flowing because it was given by God and it wasn’t built on a repertoire.

“This was my main reason for building the brand on spontaneity, so that the real strength comes from not having a plan,” he said.
