Ogun Assembly passes safe pregnancy termination bill

The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a bill providing a legal framework for the safe termination of pregnancy under specified medical and legal circumstances.

The legislation, titled the Ogun State Safe Termination of Pregnancy Law, 2026, is aimed at reducing maternal deaths and complications while promoting safe motherhood and reproductive health.

The bill, identified as H.B. No. 036/OG/2026, was approved during Thursday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, Oludaisi Elemide, at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The House adopted the report of its Committee on Health after its Chairman, Wahab Haruna, presented the committee’s recommendations.

The bill was subsequently considered clause by clause and approved by the lawmakers before being read for the third time.

Following its passage, the Speaker directed the Clerk of the House to forward the legislation to Governor Dapo Abiodun for assent.

The Assembly also approved four other bills for first reading, including legislation on gender balance in political and public offices, victims’ rights, group liability for violent and extortion-related offences, and the prevention and prohibition of human sacrifice.

Meanwhile, the lawmakers resolved to pardon former Deputy Speaker of the ninth Assembly, Dare Kadiri, by converting his previous removal from office to a voluntary resignation.

Kadiri, who represented Ijebu North II Constituency, was impeached in March 2021 over allegations of gross misconduct.

The decision followed consideration of his appeal requesting that his impeachment and removal as Deputy Speaker be converted to resignation.

Presenting the report of the Committee of the Whole House, Chief Whip Omobola Bakare said the committee considered the appeal during its sitting on August 18, 2026.

Bakare said the request was not intended to reopen the circumstances surrounding Kadiri’s impeachment.

She explained that the former lawmaker simply wanted to bring the matter to a peaceful and dignified conclusion.

According to her, the appeal was “not with the intention of revisiting the circumstances that led to the impeachment, apportioning blame, playing politics or attempting to establish his innocence.”

She added that Kadiri made the request as a former member of the Assembly who wanted to “bring that chapter of his public service to a peaceful and dignified conclusion.”

The report was subsequently adopted following a motion moved by Bakare and seconded by Bisi Oyedele.
