Suspected bandits have attacked Dukura community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, killing two residents and carting away livestock and motorcycles belonging to members of the community.
The attackers reportedly struck on Monday morning after blocking the road connecting the affected communities to Tambuwal market, leaving residents stranded and raising tension in the area.
During the attack, the bandits were said to have rustled cows, camels and sheep, while motorcycles belonging to some commercial motorcycle operators were also taken away.
The incident reportedly affected Dukura, Dalijan and other communities in Girkau Ward, including Zugu, Indire, Mazoji, Tungar Kabawa, Runtuwa, Jabga and Sabon Garin Zugu.
Confirming the attack, the Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmed Rufai, said the command received information about the incident and immediately deployed personnel to the area.
“Immediately we got the information, our men moved to the area and engaged the bandits in gunshots, forcing them to retreat.
“Unfortunately, before the arrival of the police, the bandits had already killed two people and made away with some animals,” he said.
Rufai said the police were still working to obtain more information about the incident while efforts were being made to strengthen security in the affected communities.
The attack came after suspected bandits recently invaded Tofa community in Rabah Local Government Area of the state, killing no fewer than 10 people and injuring several others.
Local sources said between 38 and 40 residents were also abducted during the attack.
