A fire outbreak on Saturday evening destroyed parts of a duplex and a shuttle bus at Mopol Base Junction, along the Old Amansea-Awka Road in Anambra State.

The incident, which occurred at about 6pm, reportedly started in one of the apartments before spreading to other sections of the building and eventually affecting the vehicle parked inside the compound.

Several properties, including household furniture, roofing materials and portions of the building, were damaged in the inferno, with the value of the losses estimated at several millions of naira.

The Anambra State Fire Service, however, prevented the fire from spreading to neighbouring properties after responding to a distress call.

Confirming the incident on Sunday, the Head of the Media and Publicity Unit of the state fire service, Chukwudi Chiketa, said firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after receiving the emergency call.

“The emergency call was received at about 1830 hours of Saturday, September 5, 2026, reporting a fire outbreak at the location.

“Immediately, the Fire Service swiftly mobilised its personnel and fire-fighting equipment to the scene,” Chiketa said.

He explained that the affected property was a duplex with a boys’ quarters apartment, while a shuttle bus was also parked within the premises.

According to him, firefighters conducted containment and extinguishing operations to stop the flames from spreading to nearby buildings.

“On arrival, the firefighters commenced aggressive containment and extinguishing operations to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading to adjoining properties,” he stated.

Chiketa said the fire damaged the roof, furniture, the shuttle bus, sections of the walls and other parts of the structure.

He added that preliminary findings pointed to a power surge as the likely cause of the incident.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the fire was caused by a power surge. Fortunately, no life was lost and no injury was recorded,” he said.

The fire service official noted that firefighters eventually secured the affected premises after extinguishing the blaze and ensuring that the area was safe.

He said the incident demonstrated the importance of contacting emergency responders promptly whenever a fire outbreak occurred.

“Make that call in time, and get swiftiest response of the Fire Service,” Chiketa added.
