Serie A: Napoli blow two-goal lead in Inter defeat

Inter Milan produced a stunning second-half comeback on Saturday, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat Napoli 3-2 in a thrilling Serie A clash at San Siro.

The reigning Italian champions appeared to be heading for defeat after Napoli struck twice within three minutes shortly after the interval.

Matteo Politano opened the scoring in the 50th minute, finding the bottom corner after his initial effort had been blocked.

Napoli then doubled their advantage three minutes later after Inter’s defence failed to react to a loose ball that remained in play.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo collected it and picked out Rasmus Højlund, who created space before curling a fine effort into the far corner.

Inter responded almost immediately. Federico Dimarco kept an overhit cross from going out of play before pulling the ball back for Lautaro Martínez, who finished from close range to reduce the deficit.

The hosts continued to push for an equaliser, with Marcus Thuram going close when his effort struck the post.

Thuram eventually found the breakthrough in the 82nd minute, rising to head Carlos Augusto’s delivery into the right-hand corner and bring Inter level.

With the game heading towards a draw, Martínez completed the remarkable turnaround in stoppage time, bundling the ball home in the 91st minute to send the home supporters into wild celebrations.

The victory maintains Inter’s perfect start to the Serie A campaign, while Napoli suffered their second consecutive league defeat after also losing at home to Como last weekend.

Curtis Jones, who joined Inter from Liverpool during the summer, came on at half-time and played a key role in the comeback.

Fellow England international John Stones remained an unused substitute, while Djed Spence missed the squad again as he continues to recover from a fitness problem.
