Super Eagles striker, Terem Moffi, has joined Bundesliga side Hamburger SV on a permanent transfer from French club OGC Nice, giving the Nigerian forward an opportunity to make his mark in Germany.
The 27-year-old has been handed the No. 9 shirt as Hamburg prepare for their return to the German top flight following promotion.
The club will open their Bundesliga campaign away against Borussia Dortmund after facing Verl in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.
Moffi arrives in Germany after spending the second half of last season on loan at Portuguese giants Porto, where he scored twice in 15 competitive appearances.
During his time at Nice, he registered 24 goals in 72 appearances after joining the Ligue 1 club in January 2023.
At international level, Moffi has scored six goals in 23 appearances for Nigeria.
His move to Hamburg also presents the striker with the chance to pursue several Bundesliga records, although some would require an extraordinary level of consistency over multiple seasons.
Awoniyi’s Nigerian single-season record
Moffi’s first major target is the Nigerian record for most Bundesliga goals in a single season.
Taiwo Awoniyi currently holds the mark after scoring 15 goals for Union Berlin during the 2021/22 campaign.
Moffi would need 16 goals in a season to surpass the former Super Eagles striker.
With 34 league matches available, that would require him to maintain a scoring rate of almost one goal every two games.
Akpoborie’s Nigerian career record
Moffi could also eventually challenge Jonathan Akpoborie’s record for the most Bundesliga goals by a Nigerian.
Akpoborie scored 61 goals in 144 Bundesliga appearances for Hansa Rostock, Stuttgart and Wolfsburg.
Since Moffi is yet to score in the Bundesliga, overtaking the record would require a long and productive spell in Germany, with 62 goals needed to move ahead of Akpoborie.
Aubameyang’s African single-season record
The Nigerian could also set his sights on the African record for most Bundesliga goals in a season.
Former Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored 31 goals during the 2016/17 campaign, a record that remains unmatched by an African player.
Moffi would have to score 32 goals to claim the record, making it one of the most difficult targets on the list.
Aubameyang’s African career record
Aubameyang also holds the record for the most Bundesliga goals by an African player, having scored 98 times during his Dortmund career.
Moffi would need 99 Bundesliga goals to surpass the Gabon international, meaning the target would almost certainly require several successful seasons in Germany.
Seeler’s Hamburg single-season record
One of Moffi’s biggest challenges at Hamburg will be attempting to surpass the club’s legendary Uwe Seeler.
Seeler scored 30 Bundesliga goals in 30 appearances during the 1963/64 season, setting a Hamburg record that has survived for decades.
Moffi would need 31 goals in a single Bundesliga campaign to take the record.
Seeler’s Hamburg career record
The Nigerian can also dream of challenging Seeler’s all-time Bundesliga scoring record for Hamburg.
The legendary striker scored 137 Bundesliga goals for HSV and remains the club’s leading scorer in the competition.
For Moffi, however, this would be a long-term ambition requiring many seasons of consistent goalscoring and regular appearances.
Keegan’s foreign-player record
A more achievable immediate target is Kevin Keegan’s record for goals by a foreign Hamburg player in a Bundesliga season.
The former England international scored 17 league goals for HSV during the 1978/79 campaign.
Moffi would need 18 goals to surpass Keegan’s mark, making it a realistic benchmark if he can quickly adapt to German football and establish himself as Hamburg’s leading attacking option.
With seven records potentially within his sights, Moffi’s Bundesliga adventure could provide the Nigerian striker with an opportunity to leave a lasting mark on German football.
