Atalanta began their 2026/27 Serie A campaign with a 2-1 victory over Sassuolo on Sunday, handing new manager Maurizio Sarri a winning start in the league.
The hosts made a quick breakthrough in the sixth minute when Giacomo Raspadori fired the ball into the net after receiving a well-timed pass from Gaetano.
Sassuolo responded strongly after the break and levelled in the 55th minute.
A defensive mistake from Atalanta allowed Tarik Odenthal to find himself in a good position inside the box, and the defender calmly finished to make it 1-1.
Atalanta restored their advantage 10 minutes later through Nikola Krstović.
The forward capitalised on hesitation in the Sassuolo defence before finding the net to put Sarri’s side back in front.
Sassuolo pushed for another equaliser but Atalanta held firm to secure all three points.
The result gives Sarri an encouraging start in his first Serie A match in charge of Atalanta, while Alberto Aquilani’s Sassuolo were left to begin the season with a narrow defeat.
