Arbeloa backs Calvin Bassey for Fulham captaincy

Fulham head coach, Álvaro Arbeloa, has backed Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey to take on a greater leadership role at the club ahead of the new Premier League season.

The Spanish coach’s faith in the 26-year-old was evident during pre-season, with Bassey handed the captain’s armband for Fulham’s final two warm-up matches against Málaga and Stuttgart.

Arbeloa believes Bassey’s defensive qualities, particularly his ability to operate in space, coupled with his strong work ethic, make him well suited to the tactical demands he wants to introduce at Craven Cottage.

“I see Calvin as a proper player, a top player for the style of play I want at Fulham,” the former Liverpool right-back said during his post-match press conference after the Stuttgart game.

“To defend so high with a lot of space in behind, he has everything, and I think he’s a top player.

“He’s a funny guy, but when we have to work, he’s the first one. I really love him, and I want him to be our leader.”

Bassey’s emergence as a key figure at Fulham comes after he established himself as one of the club’s dependable defenders since arriving from Ajax in 2023.

The Nigeria international made 30 Premier League appearances last season, starting 28 of those matches.

His performances had already earned recognition in the 2024/25 campaign when he was named Fulham’s Player of the Season after featuring in 35 league games.

With Arbeloa now preparing the squad for the new campaign, Bassey could have responsibilities extending beyond his regular defensive duties.

The Nigerian is among the experienced players, alongside Sander Berge, Antonee Robinson and goalkeeper Bernd Leno, expected to provide leadership as Arbeloa seeks to build a younger Fulham squad.

Bassey’s pre-season captaincy could therefore be an indication of the greater responsibility the Fulham boss has in mind for the defender this season.
