Fulham have confirmed the appointment of former Spain international Alvaro Arbeloa as the club’s new head coach, ushering in a new era for Super Eagles stars Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
The Premier League side revealed that Arbeloa has signed a three-year contract, replacing Marco Silva, who left Craven Cottage at the end of his contract to become the new manager of Portuguese club Benfica.
The move represents Arbeloa’s first managerial job in English football after ending his spell with Real Madrid earlier this year.
Arbeloa embraces new challenge
Reacting to his appointment, the former Real Madrid and Liverpool defender said he was honoured to lead Fulham and eager to begin work with his new squad.
He also expressed gratitude to Fulham owner Shahid Khan and vice-chairman Tony Khan for placing their confidence in him to guide the club in the Premier League.
The Spaniard added that he is excited to meet the players, commence pre-season preparations and experience the atmosphere at Craven Cottage.
“I am really looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere at Craven Cottage with Fulham fans and beginning pre-season with the players next week. I am sure we are going to enjoy an incredible journey together,” he said.
Coaching career
Arbeloa arrives at Fulham after a brief spell in charge of Real Madrid, where he succeeded Xabi Alonso following the latter’s departure in January.
His time at the Santiago Bernabeu ended in May before Jose Mourinho was appointed to take over the role.
Before moving into management, Arbeloa enjoyed a distinguished playing career with Real Madrid, Liverpool and West Ham United.
He made 98 appearances for Liverpool before returning to Real Madrid in 2009, where he lifted several major trophies.
Fresh start at Craven Cottage
Arbeloa’s appointment signals the start of a new chapter for Fulham as the club gears up for another Premier League campaign.
Among his immediate priorities will be integrating key players such as Nigerian internationals Iwobi and Bassey, who are expected to remain central to the club’s plans next season.
Both players will begin pre-season under the Spaniard as Fulham look to improve on recent campaigns and push for a higher finish in the Premier League.
