Dozens of residents rushed to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Saturday after a tanker spilled its contents near the Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode Road.
Videos from the scene showed men and women arriving with buckets, jerrycans and other containers as they attempted to collect the spilled petroleum product.
The Punch reported that some residents were seen gathering the fuel from drainage channels and other locations where it had accumulated, despite the serious risk of fire or explosion.
The incident drew the attention of officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps, alongside personnel from the Federal and State Fire Services.
The emergency responders moved in to secure the area, contain the situation and reduce the danger posed by the spilled fuel as residents continued to gather around the scene.
The presence of the emergency agencies was particularly important given the highly flammable nature of the petroleum product and the potential consequences of open flames or other ignition sources near the spill.
Footage from the location captured the extent of the residents’ response as they attempted to collect the fuel while emergency personnel worked to manage the incident.
