Henderson joins Chelsea as free agent after Brentford exit

Jordan Henderson has joined Chelsea on a free transfer after mutually agreeing to end his contract with Brentford, signing a two-year deal with the Stamford Bridge club.

The former Liverpool and England captain had one year remaining on his Brentford contract before both parties agreed to part ways, with the Bees confirming his exit last week.

Speaking after completing the move, Henderson expressed his excitement about joining the Blues.

“Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” Henderson said to club media.

“I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction.

“For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”

Henderson becomes Chelsea’s eighth signing of an active summer transfer window, joining fellow new arrivals including Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra, Danny Welbeck and England international Morgan Rogers.

The 36-year-old will also work under new head coach Xabi Alonso, who has taken charge ahead of the new campaign.

Henderson spent just one season at Brentford after arriving from Ajax in July 2025. During his spell at the Gtech Community Stadium, he made 32 Premier League appearances.

His return to England followed a brief stint in the Netherlands and came after a distinguished career at Liverpool, where he made 492 appearances over 12 years.

As club captain, he led the Reds to major honours, including the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup titles.

Before joining Ajax, Henderson had a short spell with Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq, where he played under former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard.

Explaining the midfielder’s departure from Brentford, manager Keith Andrews said: “Taking into consideration Jordan’s ambitions and where our squad is currently, we both felt it was the right time for Jordan to pursue his career elsewhere.”
