IGP commissions Taraba’s first permanent police headquarters after 35 years

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Friday inaugurated the permanent headquarters of the Taraba State Police Command in Jalingo, ending more than three decades without a purpose-built command facility since the state’s creation in 1991.

The Punch reported that while speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Disu expressed confidence that the new headquarters would enhance security operations, improve personnel welfare, and strengthen collaboration between the police and communities across Taraba State.

Represented by the Taraba State Commissioner of Police, Moorkwap Dongshal Sebastine, the IGP said the facility would improve operational effectiveness and support efforts aimed at sustaining peace, security, and development in the state.

He acknowledged the contributions of the Federal Government, the Taraba State Government, the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, and other partners who played key roles in bringing the project to completion.

According to him, the headquarters demonstrates the commitment of the police leadership to providing a suitable working environment for officers and personnel.

“The completion of this magnificent building is long overdue, considering that Taraba State was created in 1991. However, it is better late than never. This project stands as a testament to the determination of the Nigeria Police Force leadership to leave a lasting legacy and create an environment that will enable officers to discharge their duties effectively,” he said.

Disu reiterated that the welfare of police officers remains a top priority, stressing that a motivated workforce is better positioned to perform its duties efficiently and professionally.

He noted that the force would continue to enhance working conditions through improved office infrastructure, accommodation, healthcare services, training opportunities, and other welfare programmes.

He also urged personnel to properly maintain the facility to ensure its longevity and usefulness for future generations.

The police chief further appealed to traditional institutions, religious leaders, youth organisations, civil society groups, the media, and residents to support law enforcement agencies by providing credible and timely information.

He emphasised that successful policing depends on strong partnerships between security agencies and the communities they serve.

Also addressing the gathering, Governor Agbu Kefas reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to prioritise security, describing it as a critical foundation for economic growth, social stability, and sustainable development.

Represented by the Commandant of Taraba Marshals and retired Commissioner of Police, Abeh Cyril, the governor said the headquarters was the result of collective efforts aimed at strengthening security infrastructure and boosting the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies in the state.

He praised the Inspector-General of Police and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund for facilitating the project, noting that the facility would provide a better working environment for officers while improving coordination, operational efficiency, and service delivery.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Alhaji Mohammed Sheidu, described the commissioning as a reflection of the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing security infrastructure and promoting police welfare.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for making security a key component of the Renewed Hope Agenda and lauded the IGP’s leadership, adding that investments in security institutions ultimately contribute to the safety and well-being of all Nigerians.
