The Senate has passed a constitutional amendment bill seeking the establishment of state police across Nigeria, marking a significant step toward restructuring the country’s policing system.
The bill was approved on Wednesday after lawmakers considered and adopted its 26 clauses during the Committee of the Whole.
The proposed legislation provides a constitutional framework for the creation of state-controlled police services that would operate alongside the existing federal police structure.
The move is aimed at addressing growing concerns over insecurity and improving law enforcement at the sub-national level by allowing states to establish and manage their own police formations.
