The Ogun State Government has stated that investigations into a sexual assault allegation made by a popular TikTok user, Nsikak Abigail Emem, popularly known as Mirabel, revealed that the claim was fabricated and did not warrant criminal prosecution.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Ogun State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), said findings by security agencies and admissions made by the social media personality showed that the rape allegation she made earlier this year was untrue.
According to him, “Investigations conducted by the relevant authorities, coupled with Mirabel’s own admissions, established that the rape allegation was false and deliberately fabricated.”
He explained that the outcome of the investigation showed there was no offender to prosecute and no public safety threat arising from the allegation.
Ogungbade said the state government considered rehabilitation a more appropriate response than prosecution.
“After a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding the matter, it was determined that psycho-social rehabilitation would better serve the interest of justice than criminal prosecution,” he said.
The commissioner disclosed that Mirabel has since been under the care of the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, where she is receiving support and counselling.
He added that reports received by the Ministry of Justice indicate positive progress in her rehabilitation process.
“The feedback we have received shows that she is responding well to rehabilitation and is currently preparing for examinations that will enable her to further her education,” Ogungbade stated.
Mirabel had earlier alleged in a viral social media post that unknown individuals broke into her residence in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area, and sexually assaulted her, a claim that generated widespread public sympathy and reactions from celebrities and advocacy groups.
However, questions later emerged over inconsistencies in her account, including the absence of evidence supporting a forced entry into her residence and a lack of corroborating phone records.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that Mirabel voluntarily reported to a police station and underwent medical examination before being released to the Ministry of Women Affairs for further care.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Government says efforts are continuing to secure justice in the gang rape case involving a 15-year-old girl in Ibogun.
Ogungbade revealed that authorities recently arrested the alleged leader of the group, Qudus Abiola Yekini, following ongoing collaboration between the Ministry of Justice and the police.
He described the arrest as a major breakthrough and assured residents that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects who are still at large.
The commissioner reiterated the state’s commitment to combating gender-based violence and ensuring that perpetrators of sexual offences are brought to justice.
He also warned against making false allegations, stressing that both violent crimes and false reports would attract appropriate legal consequences.
