Chelsea beat Inter to sign Marco Palestra from Atalanta

Chelsea have reached an agreement with Atalanta for the transfer of highly rated Italian right-back Marco Palestra, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Blues have reportedly beaten Inter Milan to the defender’s signature after submitting a superior offer.

Inter had been considered frontrunners for the deal, but Chelsea’s proposal, worth more than €55 million, eclipsed the Serie A giants’ €50 million bid.

Romano confirmed the development in a post on X on Wednesday.

He wrote, “Marco Palestra to Chelsea, here we go! Verbal agreement in place between all parties.

“Atalanta to receive package over €55m fee plus sell-on clause, long term deal to Italian talented RWB.

“Chelsea hijack Inter move and get new talent for Xabi Alonso.”

Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso is believed to have been instrumental in convincing the club to pursue the deal.

Palestra is now poised to become the first signing of Alonso’s tenure at Stamford Bridge.

The 22-year-old enjoyed an impressive campaign while on loan at Cagliari last season. He featured in 37 Serie A matches, contributed five goals and assists combined, and was recognised with the league’s Best Defender award.

Highlighting the defender’s attributes, Italian football journalist James Horncastle told The Athletic, “Palestra was a revelation on loan from Atalanta at Cagliari this season. He is tall and well-built, but what stands out most is his speed.”

Palestra also earned his first senior cap for Italy during the World Cup play-off semi-final against Northern Ireland in March.

His expected arrival at Chelsea could signal a tactical shift under Alonso. The Spanish coach enjoyed significant success with a three-man defence during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, winning the Bundesliga title, although he preferred a back-four system at Real Madrid.

Given that Palestra operated mainly as a right wing-back during his spell at Cagliari, he is expected to fill a similar role at Chelsea.

The move could also impact the futures of other defenders at the club. With captain Reece James continuing to struggle with injuries, Alonso may utilise the England international as a right-sided centre-back.

Meanwhile, Malo Gusto’s position could come under threat amid reported interest from Manchester City.
