Pregnancy rumours at Alex Ekubo burial sparks online reactions

A claim that the wife of late Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo may be pregnant has sparked widespread reactions online following his burial in Arochukwu, Abia State.

According to The Punch, the comment was made when the late actor’s remains were received at the palace of the Eze Aro of Arochukwu during funeral rites held on Thursday.

The remark was made by a representative of the traditional ruler, who offered prayers that Ekubo’s lineage would continue despite his death.

During the address, the representative said there were reports indicating that the actor’s wife might be expecting a child and expressed hope that the unborn child would surpass the achievements of his father.

The video from the ceremony later went viral on social media, drawing mixed reactions from users across different platforms.

While some expressed joy over the possibility, describing it as a continuation of the late actor’s legacy, others criticised the public discussion of such a sensitive matter during a burial ceremony.

Several social media users argued that the issue should have been kept private out of respect for the grieving family.

Amid the solemn proceedings, the actor’s widow, Anwuli Ekubo, was seen quietly observing the rites. Dressed in white, and wearing sunglasses and a face mask, she appeared visibly emotional throughout the ceremony.

Speaking at the funeral, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, represented by his Chief of Staff, Caleb Ajagba, described Ekubo’s death as a major loss to Abia State and the Nigerian entertainment industry.

“The news of Alex’s passing came as a profound shock. Today, we mourn not merely an actor, brother and friend, but a creative force, a cultural ambassador and a proud son of Arochukwu whose talent brought honour to Abia State and Nigeria,” he said.

Also speaking at the service, the Lead Pastor of Streams of Joy International, Umuahia, Eno Eze, encouraged mourners to reflect on living impactful lives and leaving lasting legacies.

Meanwhile, actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli revealed that proceeds from The First Lady, the first film she produced featuring the late actor, would be given to his family.

The announcement, however, generated divided opinions, with some praising the gesture while others felt it should have been made after the burial ceremonies.

Alex Ekubo passed away on May 11, 2026, and was laid to rest after a series of funeral activities held in Lagos and his hometown of Arochukwu.
